I have lots of great plans for this blog. Pics that will make you smile. Stories that will make you laugh. Quick tips to make life with your pet just a bit easier... And I bet from the title of this first blog you thought I was going to start with talking about choosing a pet.
But your wrong. You probably would not be reading this unless you already had a pet. So instead, let's talk about finding the right trainer. Where the fun begins.
Your new dog is an important addition to your family, and if you will be inviting a trainer into your home it is important to be able to connect with ease. Consider the personalities of your family members, consider the environment and special circumstances within your home, were you comfortable speaking on the phone? What are the basic philosophies of the potential trainer you are considering? How does that match your personality? Do the trainer's personality , methods and demeanor match your objectives?
I recently was referred to a local family who had just adopted Max, a 9wk old Golden Retriever ( Shown below, who can resist a puppy pic?) The family of four includes 2 young daughters, ages 6 and 7. Due to some medical issues in the family, Mom is committed to training Max to be a super well behaved, aware and sensitive dog. The whole family is excited about participating, and excited to have sweet Max in their home. For this Mom, she shared not only her objectives with me, but how she chose the " right" trainer. " Some had super strict methods" , she said. " My daughters are gentle , and would be fearful of some of the voice techniques used". She went on to say that after our lengthy and enjoyable conversation, she felt comfortable. Comfortable about inviting me into her home and sharing the everyday aspects of their life so we could work together successfully.
And that's what it's about. All the good stuff. The wet licks, the backyard play, the successfully executed commands, the good behavior that allows you to just hang with the dog doing whatever your family does, wherever you like to do it. The rewards aren't just for the young puppy, they are for the whole family, and lucky for me, well,... I get to help you enjoy.
